Peru has a rich history of tradition and cultures despite being controlled by the Spanish. The most popular of Peru's cultures was the Inca. The Inca built the largest empire in the Western Hemisphere pre-Columbia. The Inca reached a population of about 40 million at the height of their empire. When Francisco Pizarro killed their leader, Atahualpa, in 1533, Cusco and ultimately Peru fell under the control of the Spanish. It wouldn't be until July 28,1821 that Peru became an independent country.
